Lilly Camp Care Package

Eli Lilly and Company has provided insulin and glucagon to diabetes camps across the country for many years. Now, to make the camp experience more meaningful to children with diabetes, Lilly has developed the Lilly Camp Care Package initiative for the 2008 summer season. In addition to product donations, this initiative provides

participating American Diabetes Association and Diabetes Education and Camping Association diabetes camps across the United States with educational resources and programs that help children learn to manage their diabetes while having fun at camp.

The Lilly Camp Care Package includes the following resources to meet the needs of campers, their caregivers, and diabetes camps:

Diabetes educational kit

This kit was created to help children with diabetes learn how to manage diabetes in a fun-filled, friendly way. The kit includes a diabetes educational booklet and a logbook just for kids, food spinner that helps estimate carbohydrates, colorful stickers, a water bottle, and an inspiring letter from Olympic cross-country skier Kris Freeman. All of these educational pieces are in a durable, high-quality L.L.Bean® Book Pack customized with an emergency tag in the front pocket made specifically for children with diabetes.

Parent/caregiver kit

This kit was designed specifically for parents/caregivers of children with diabetes. The kit includes a welcome letter from Lilly, information about the other resources offered through the Lilly Camp Care Package initiative, a reference sheet listing common parent/caregiver areas of interest regarding type 1 diabetes, and an inspiring letter from Olympic skier Kris Freeman. Lilly's educational brochures covering the topics of raising a child with diabetes, glucagon, and carbohydrate counting for children are also included.

Inspired by Diabetes Camps in Color program

Campers may have a fun-filled opportunity to share their diabetes journey by contributing to a group art project. Individual artistic expressions will blend together on a banner to tell the unique diabetes story of the camp's participants. Upon completion, the banner will be submitted to the Inspired by Diabetes Camps in Color program. In support of the Inspired by Diabetes 2007/2008 program, Lilly has donated funds to diabetes youth camps in the United States and to the International Diabetes Foundation's Life for a Child program, which provides diabetes care to children in developing countries.

Motivational speakers

Olympic cross-country skier and reigning U.S. National Champion Kris Freeman will visit select diabetes camps. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 19, Kris will travel to camps this summer to share his inspiring story, including his upcoming participation in the 2010 Olympics. Campsites that Kris is unable to visit may receive a DVD so that campers have the opportunity to hear his message and see that any dream is possible…even while managing diabetes.

Lilly Hands and Hearts

The Lilly Hands and Hearts program helps foster healthy communities by connecting Lilly employees to opportunities where they can volunteer their time, talent, and passion to make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteering at a Diabetes Camp is one of these opportunities available to Lilly employees.
