Lilly Camp Care Package
At Lilly, providing diabetes camps across the country with insulin and other supplies has been a longtime tradition. But Lilly knows there are other important ways that can make the camp experience more meaningful, so in 2007 the Lilly Camp Care Package initiative was developed. In addition to product donations, this initiative provides diabetes camps across
the nation with educational resources to help children learn to manage their diabetes. To learn more about the Lilly Camp Care Package, please read our annual newsletter.
Lilly is proud to offer the following resources to meet the needs of campers and their caregivers:
Diabetes educational kit
A user-friendly kit for children with diabetes is provided through camps participating in the Lilly Camp Care Package initiative. Each item of the kit was thoughtfully created to help kids learn how to manage diabetes in a fun-filled, friendly way. The kit includes a diabetes educational booklet and a log book just for kids; the Spinner, a food spinner to help estimate carbohydrates; and an inspiring letter from Olympic cross-country skier Kris Freeman. All of these educational pieces are in a durable, high-quality L.L.Bean® Book Pack customized with an emergency tag sewn inside.
Parent/caregiver kit
The kit is designed for parents/caregivers to provide useful information about diabetes and inform them of other resources offered through the Lilly Camp Care Package initiative. It includes a welcome letter from Lilly, information on Lilly products and carbohydrate counting for children, and other important information on raising a child with diabetes. Also inside is a handy reference listing common parent/caregiver areas of interest on type 1 diabetes, as well as an inspiring letter from Olympic cross-country skier Kris Freeman.
Motivational Speaking—Kris Freeman
Olympic cross-country skier and U.S. National Champion Kris Freeman will visit select diabetes camps throughout the U.S. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 19, Kris travels to camps to share his inspiring story, including his participation in the 2010 Olympics. Camps Kris is unable to visit may receive a DVD so campers have the opportunity to hear his message and see that reaching for any dream is possible—even while managing diabetes.
Lilly Hands and Hearts
The Lilly Hands and Hearts employee volunteer program helps foster healthy communities by connecting Lilly employees to opportunities where they can volunteer their time, talent, and passion to make a difference in the lives of others. Diabetes camps are one such area where Lilly employees can, either as a group or individually, volunteer their time.

Camps in Color
An art therapy-based program that encourages campers to share their diabetes story through art while having fun at camp. The goal of this program is to tap into the strength of common diabetes experiences and to provide the tools in order for campers to express these experiences in an artistic way through teamwork and cooperation. Multiple age-appropriate activities are included for use with canvas squares as their medium to facilitate the creative process and personal sharing.
